Community Members,
Some may ask why Mound City R-2 has chosen the Mask Mandate. To me the answer is very simple: To keep our students in the building to receive face-to-face instruction. I was approached by many community members in July and August stating they were so happy we were going to start school with little restrictions. They also stated they wanted school to be as close to normal as possible. Fortunately we were able to accomplish that for close to 3 full months, Now Holt County is seeing COVID-19 cases increase dramatically. Since October 14th we have seen a total of 11 positive cases from students, teachers, staff members. We have also seen 178 students and staff members quarantined during this time frame. However, not all quarantines have come from school as some have been from close contacts at home. The bigger number is of those 178 students and staff members in quarantine, only one ended up testing positive.
Each one of us has their own thoughts about masks and how effective they are. Some people don't like how they feel on their face, has trouble focusing on tasks, cause headaches, or can cause dizziness. Thoughts are all over the board and I respect each person's opinion of them. The bottom line is we need the students to receive the best education possible. That is for them to receive Face-To-Face Instruction. In order for that to happen, the mask mandate had to happen.
The situation is ever changing and decisions have to be made that are in the best interest of Mound City R-2 students and staff. I wish that we didn't have to deal with COVID-19, but I assure you each person working in this building is doing the best we possibly can. Stay Safe!!
